Blu-Ray Review – When They Cry (Season 1)

My review for When They Cry Season 1 is up on ANN!

“Keiichi Maebara is a normal teenaged boy adjusting to his new life in the sleepy country town of Hinamizawa. Though he’s a newcomer to the reclusive and storied old village, he quickly finds himself befriended by a gaggle of local girls, all of them quite eager to welcome him into their group as a friend. Joined by the plucky Rena, the headstrong Mion, and the adorable young pair of Rika and Satoko, our protagonist finds himself enjoying a carefree, lackadaisical life. That all changes once he hears murmurs of the gruesome deaths that stain Hinamizawa’s past. As Keichi investigates the series of dismemberments and disappearances attributed to a curse laid on the town by its patron deity, he begins to get the feeling that he’s being followed. Before too long, Keichi is convinced that at least one of his new friends might be out for his blood. Or maybe they all are.”

DVD Review – Turn A Gundam – The Movies

My review of the Turn A Gundam films is up on ANN!

“Few franchises in anime have as storied and significant a history as Gundam, and Turn A Gundam is a series that seems to be pretty universally recognized as one of the top tier shows that the brand has to offer. When I popped in the first disc of the two-film Turn A Gundam set, however, I admit I was more than a little hesitant. These two movies, Earth Light and Moon Butterfly, are compilation films, one of the most inconsistent genres in anime when it comes to quality. While there have been some that I’ve enjoyed, such as those produced for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, most series compilation movies have left me rather ambivalent; carving twenty to fifty episodes of material into a couple of two-hour-long films is no easy feat, after all. WithTurn A Gundam running fifty episodes, could I expect the quality of the series to be represented when condensed into only 260 minutes?”

Blu-Ray Review – Dragonar Academy

My review of Dragonar Academy is up on ANN!

“So yes, the story in this show is superfluous. The characters are awful, the acting is awful, and the plot would make even the most generic fantasy JRPG scoff at its lack of originality. The “dragons” of the “boobs/fanservice and dragons” equation do show up, but with surprisingly little gusto. For a show that’s ostensibly about dragon knights going to battle, there are maybe two or three halfway decent action scenes in the entire show; the rest of it is lame comedy shtick and overindulgent world building. Oh, and fanservice.”

Blu-Ray Review – Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F

My review of Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F is up on ANN!

“So here we arrive at the 2015 feature follow-up to Battle of Gods, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’. With the “F” in question being none other than the infamous Frieza, even the skeptic in me had to admit that the prospect of one of the greatest Dragon Ball villains of all returning was promising. Having watched the movie in all of its 1080p Blu-Ray glory, can I say it was worth it?

Kind-of-sort-of-maybe?”

Blu-Ray Review – Selector Infected WIXOSS

My review of Funimation’s DVD/BLU-RAY Combo set for Selector Infected WIXOSS is up on Anime News Network:

“If you replace “Selectors” with “Magical Girls” and “Other Selectors” with “Witches”, and Selector Infected Wixoss and Puella Magi Madoka Magica share basically the same plot, not to mention a penchant for nonsensical and overlong titles. Now, this is not an inherently terrible thing. Madoka Magica is one of the greatest anime ever made as far as I’m concerned, and if Selector Infected Wixoss is going to copy notes, it might as well be from the smartest kid in class. If WIXOSS used a familiar formula to tell a thoughtful, interesting, and exciting story, then all the more power to it.”

Movie Review – Patema Inverted (2013)

My favorite moment of Patema Inverted occurs about fifteen minutes into the film:

Patema, a young girl who lives in a world of cracked and rusted tunnels and endless caverns, has been exploring the “danger zone” of the ruins near her home against her guardians’ wishes, in search of “the true world” her friend Lagos told her of years before.
